January 2022 Horoscope: Aspects & Transits

We start off January with a bit of turbulence from 2021, and frankly, we aren’t exactly heading into an easy year by any means. You can check out my Yearly Horoscopes & Predictions for 2022 for more context. Venus will remain retrograde until January 29th and will actually be joined by Mercury retrograde on January 14th. Venus will continue to test our commitments, partnerships, and overall sense of stability throughout January. Mercury incidentally entered its pre-shadow phase the end of December… when thousands of flights were being cancelled and Omicron was surging. January might be a bit frustrating, with plenty of setbacks that bring us back to the drawing board. While we may get bit by the productivity bug this month, the retrogrades are emphasizing the importance of adaptability and going with the flow.

Mercury entering into Aquarius and the New Moon in Capricorn on January 2nd will have us looking towards the future and our long-term goals. Technology and electronics will be especially prone to malfunctioning while Mercury is retrograde in Aquarius—be sure to back-up or secure important files and digital assets! Although Mercury will brew up some mayhem to reveal what requires maintenance or refining in our daily lives, the New Moon in Capricorn is nonetheless a powerful lunation is supercharging our resolutions or intentions for the new year. Manifesting with the Capricorn New Moon is not just about setting an intention—it requires taking tangible steps towards your goals. While the Saturnian influence of Capricorn builds slowly over time, it creates things solid enough to stand the test of time. Don’t squander this precious momentum!

The Cancer Full Moon on January 17th is particularly potent, as Cancer is ruled by the Moon. While this Full Moon is very emotional, it brings to the surface anything that needs to be healed or processed. Pluto in Capricorn will absolutely be upping the intensity as well. Our collective sensitivity and intuition is also heightened this month, especially around this Full Moon, as it forms a trine with Neptune in Pisces—both of these luminaries are in their domicile signs. January 17th is an exceptionally good time to perform any rituals or spells with the intention of increasing your psychic perceptions. Moon water is the perfect conduit to absorb this energetic charge.

Pluto will leave its mark this month as it forms conjunctions with the Sun on the 16th and Mercury on the 28th. The luminous rays of the Sun and the cerebral Mercury are sure to pierce beneath the surface and glean insights into hidden truths. Both Mercury and Venus will conjunct Pluto one last time after they go direct, on February 11th and March 3rd, respectively. The conjunctions with Pluto this month could hint at what is to come in February, when the United States will have the first of three doses of its Pluto return this year. We can expect dramatic fluctuations in the market or measures to attempt to correct them around these Pluto returns. We might yo-yo between deflation and inflation throughout the year, which seems likely to depreciate the value of USD. While it is difficult to determine what exactly will take the place of the USD, diversifying assets (into precious metals and properties) is a good idea. Cryptocurrencies are also good investments overall, but will likely prove volatile throughout this year as well. Currency is not the only means of security either. Fostering communities, social support, mutual aid networks, alternate means of production and resource acquisition (e.g., knitting clothing or growing your own food) are all different ways to establish independence from centralized financial systems. Any safety nets you can set up now will surely bring some assurance regardless of whatever situation you find yourself in later.

It is hard to say how the astrology of this month (and to some extent the first half of this year) will play out, as the effects will likely not be readily apparent… again, Capricorn energy takes time before it fully culminates. We should be extra discerning and not rely on things just correcting themselves, or track the debt that is being accrued in this time. The lunar nodes are also shifting—the North Node into Taurus and South Node into Scorpio—meaning we should expect some major changes in our financial system over this next year and a half cycle. With the South Node in Scorpio in specifically, economies that attempt to attempt to bail out with more debt will likely buckle under the weight. Ultimately, the financial system as we know it is bound to change, whether that takes the form of a new global currency or different infrastructure altogether. Unfortunately, it is admittedly difficult to prepare for all the different possibilities—but it is more a question of if rather than when the global economy will shift, and how the world will respond to it. We should remember that none of this is the end of the world. We have many past and present examples of currencies being replaced in various countries such as Salvador and Turks. This month (and this year by extension) really demands that we find a sense of stability outside of systems we have no control over, and learn to derive our security in our adaptability.
